What is a Backflow Preventer?

Backflow refers to the reversal of the appropriate flow of water in your irrigation system caused by pressure changes resulting from gravity or vacuum pressure.  When this occurs, water begins to flow backward into the sprinkler system. The worst case scenario is that this contaminates the municipal water supply.  Backflow preventers ensure unsafe water is diverted away from your property and the municipal water supply. 

Backflow preventers are required by state and federal law to be inspected annually by an authorized tester to ensure they are working properly and efficiently.  We are able to handle your irrigation/sprinkler backflow preventer testing needs.     

Backflow assemblies require proper winterization as they can freeze here in Utah if not winterized properly, resulting in freeze damage, including a cracked backflow preventer.  As part of our winterization service, we ensure your backflow assembly is properly insulated and/or protected.  We also thermostatic freeze relief valves, to prevent a cracked backflow preventer.  Given the cost of replacing a backflow assembly, taking proper measures to maintain your backflow assembly investment is prudent.   

During normal use, small rocks and sand can get into the backflow assembly and cause wear and tear, eventually causing a backflow preventer to fail.  Additionally, corrosion can impact the performance and integrity of a backflow assembly.  The most common parts of the backflow assembly to fail are the ball valve, the pressure gauge, and when cracks form in the valve body.
